BMW M40B16The BMW M40B16 is a 1.6 L (1,596 cc, 97.4 cu·in) straight-four natural aspirated four-stroke liquid-cooled internal combustion gasoline engine, manufactured by Bayerische Motoren Werke AG from 1987 to 1994.

A 84.0 mm (3.31 in) cylinder bore and 72.0 mm (2.83 in) piston stroke give the M40B16 engine a total of 1,596 cc of displacement. The compression ratio rating is 9.0:1.

The BMW M40B16 engine produced 99.3 PS (73.0 kW; 98.0 HP) at 5,500 rpm of maximum output power and 141 N·m (14.4 kg·m, 103.9 ft·lb) at 4,250 rpm of peak torque for E30 model, or 102.0 PS (75.0 kW; 101.0 HP) at 5,500 rpm of horsepower and 143 N·m (14.6 kg·m, 105.4 ft·lb) at 4,250 rpm of torque for E36 model.
